How warm is the water?

A prospective guest asked what the water temperature might be in early August (for their kids swimming). Off the top of our head, we said probably about 65°F, possibly as warm as 70°F.

But we can do better than that — the Maine Department of Marine Resources has been measuring the sea surface temperature here in West Boothbay Harbor almost every day since 1905!

We downloaded the data from their website, and averaged the daily values for the most recent 10 years. And the results are that in early August, the typical water temperatures are…
